Israel Salt Industries Ltd., which is involved in the fields of finance, real estate, and industry, has always been a key part of life in the towns of Atlit and Eilat, contributing to these communities, aiding their needy and elderly, and cultivating and preserving the open areas surrounding these communities for conservation purposes and to enhance residents’ quality of life. The company’s industrial activities focus on two main fields – salt production and aquaculture.
Salt production is carried out in the traditional fashion – evaporating the water from evaporation ponds using a combination of solar energy and advanced technology. The evaporation pond area on the company’s production site is preserved as a "green island" of sorts, which hosts many wildlife species and incorporates nature and bird-watching activities via the establishment of lookout points and nesting and habitat grounds for thousands of species of water fowl and migrating birds.
The company is currently in the process of establishing the Salt Museum, which will be devoted to showcasing the history of the salt industry in Atlit and the unique nature of the salt production process in its ponds, while also incorporating an examination of the environment as a whole. Regarding aquaculture, the company is involved in the raising and development of various fish species, which are used for both food and ornamental purposes that may contribute to solving the world’s food shortage and to reduce the extent of offshore fishing.
